Frederik Kramer studierte Wirtschaftsinformatik am Institut für technische und betriebliche Informationssysteme (ITI) der Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg. Sein erstes Unternehmen gründete er im Jahr 1997 in den frühen Tagen des Internet- Zeitalters. Zwischen 2007 und 2014 hat Frederik Kramer als Projektleiter eine Vielzahl internationaler und nationaler Forschungsprojekte geleitet. Aktuell ist er technischer Geschäftsführer der 2011 von ihm gegründeten initOS GmbH.
Bereits seit der Gründung seines ersten Unternehmens im Jahre 1997 widmete sich Frederik Kramer der Nutzung von Open Source Software bei der strategischen Gestaltung von IT-Systemlandschaften. Im Jahr 2016 konnte er, im Rahmen seiner wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit als Mitarbeiter am Magdeburg Research and Competence Cluster (MRCC), unter der Leitung von Prof. Klaus Turowski, seine Promotion mit dem Thema „Strategic System Landscape Engineering für kleine und mittlere Unternehmen“ erfolgreich abschließen.
Im Zusammenhang mit seiner Arbeit am ITI hat er zahlreiche nationale und internationale Publikationen veröffentlicht und an diversen Projekten mitgewirkt. Sein Forschungsschwerpunkt gilt dabei insbesondere der strategischen Nutzung von Open Source Software zur Gewinnung nachhaltiger Wettbewerbsvorteile.
