Fujitsu Explores the Operation of High Performance In-Memory Technology at University of Magdeburg

Fujitsu is the leading Japanese information and communication technology (ICT) company offering a full range of technology products, solutions and services. Approximately 170,000 Fujitsu people support customers in more than 100 countries. Together with scientists of the University of Magdeburg Fujitsu now starts a research project regarding the operation of in-memory databases inside heterogeneous system landscapes.

The cooperation with the Magdeburg Research and Competence Cluster (MRCC) was started last year by CIO International Business Benno Zollner. Fujitsu has now started another project aimed at strengthening the value proposition for their customers. A team from MRCC, at the head of Prof. Dr. Klaus Turowski, and Fujitsu’s Product Development Group will develop a leading operational concept for SAP HANA based on the Fujitsu solution FlexFrame Orchestrator.

The start of the new project has been marked with a kick-off event at the MRCC on the 10th of October 2013. Jens Peter Seick, Senior Vice President, Product Development Group, summed up the significance of the cooperation: “SAP HANA brings a major paradigm shift with far-reaching effects on the ability of enterprise IT to support a business’s processes and strategy. We expect this cooperation with MRCC to provide us with best-in-class operational practices for SAP HANA which our customers can use to strengthen their competitive position in their markets.”

The unique combination of academic research and practical experience makes MRCC an attractive partner for Fujitsu, which also Prof. Dr. Klaus Turowski confirmed: “The kick-off event represents not only the starting signal of extending a productive collaboration which has proved successful for MRCC and Fujitsu, but also reinforces the transfer of VLBA LAB’s research findings into innovative products. In this manner research findings can be developed and practically tested directly inside a specially built SAP HANA system landscape.”

Benno Zollner added, “Fujitsu Lab at MRCC helps us start the implementation of SAP HANA. This first-hand experience will be leveraged with our customers embarking on a similar transformation.” Also the president of the University of Magdeburg, Prof. Dr. Jens Strackeljan, was present and attributes a further importance to the expansion: “The success story of the collaboration between Fujitsu and the University of Magdeburg shows how science and economy are intertwined and profit from each other straightly through practical research. By means of the extension we contribute to Magdeburg as a location for business and science.”
